"The family is the cornerstone of our society. More than any other force, it shapes the attitude, hopes, the ambitions and the values of the child. And when the family collapses, it is the children that are usually damaged. When it happens on a massive scale, the entire community itself is crippled."
~ Former US President
Lyndon B. Johnson, 1985.

"The family is the building block of society. It is a nursery, a school, a hospital, a leisure center, a place of refuge, and is a place of rest. It fashions our beliefs, it encompasses the whole of society."
~ Former UK Prime Minister
Margaret Thatcher

The Role of Family in American Society

Family is America's traditional common denominator. Numerous studies have shown that when parents create a stable home environment for their children, they are more likely to produce well adjusted, happy, and better educated children who are less likely to be involved in drugs, crime, and other society-destructive activities.

What Happened?

During the past half century, American society has become an enemy of the traditional family. Often the media portrays the family as weird, outdated, and not needed. Many political, judicial, and government policies and leaders attack and denigrate the family. Add to this such destabilizing factors as divorce and absent fathers that break families apart, the family as the cornerstone of American society begins to collapse.

But Wait-What Do Our Children Want?

A recent Associated Press article titled "Young Americans Tie Families to Happiness," reported that of the 1,280 young Americans polled, "73% said a good relationship with their parents makes them happy! Another surprise: Those whose biological parents were still together were the happiest." According to the survey, young Americans are saying "get your act together, America. It's the family that makes us happy."

Family Leadership

The family has shown great resilience over the centuries, surviving even the horrors of two world wars. Modern families need to tap this resilience to meet 21st century challenges. William Shakespeare wrote: "I am for the house with the narrow gate, which I take too little for pomp to enter." Parents are the keepers of the family gate, which requires bold and fresh parenting leadership in the home.

The Foundation believes most parents want to be good parents, and they want their children to become good people. Parents want to love, and be loved by, their children. Unfortunately, far too many parents get derailed as keepers of the gate. The Foundation's Begin with the Children program helps parents stay on track. Its 3 Parent Things Parenting Plan, and the accompanying user friendly educational materials, provides parents of young children with key leadership principles for building a strong family life and tradition. The Foundation's Empower the Family program helps community leaders strengthen family as the basic institution in their local communities.

Change America for the Better

A grass roots paradigm shift in parenting, along with local community and business leaders recognizing and supporting family as the community's basic institution, can bring greater happiness, civility, and integrity to America's children and to society.
